How Blue Nelumbo went from static CFA content to a fully scalable learning platform
A fully custom CFA learning platform, live in 6 months and ready for 1,000+ concurrent users from day one.
Great content with no scalable way to sell it
Blue Nelumbo is an edtech company building a CFA exam prep platform for one of the most demanding certifications in finance. The goal was a single platform that could carry students through all three levels.
Blue Nelumbo had already built the curriculum. Readings, question banks, practice quizzes, and mock exams were mapped across a 5-level CFA content structure.
But selling access to that content is a different problem entirely. Different learners needed different access. Free trial users could only see certain subtopics. Paid learners had different entitlements depending on whether they bought a single module, a crash course, or the full syllabus.
Additionally, Indian and international students needed different pricing and currencies. Every purchase had to flow through Razorpay, trigger the right subscription, and update access in real time.
And someone had to manage all of it. They needed a backend that could hold all of that together without any of it breaking when real users were already on the platform.
Building a platform that works like a business, not just a product
Before writing a single API endpoint, we worked backward from the learner journey and the business model Blue Nelumbo wanted to support. We wanted to solve the architecture before loading the platform with features.
We designed 36 data models across learning, commerce, and analytics before any development began. Getting the full data architecture right upfront meant every feature that came after had a stable, logical foundation.
Learning, commerce, and analytics modelled before development began.
A CFA platform sells access. We built a centralized access layer that resolved each learner's entitlements based on their subscription tier, enforced at the API level, so free trial users, module buyers, and full syllabus subscribers all got exactly the right experience automatically.
One entitlement layer at every request.
With access control solved cleanly, every purchase instantly updated what a learner could see. Regional pricing handled INR and USD automatically, while coupon validation, upgrade discounts, and full Razorpay payment processing with webhook handling and invoice emails were built as one coherent flow.
Razorpay webhooks handle currency resolution at checkout.
We built three assessment modes where difficulty-weighted scoring fed into live preparedness calculations at the subtopic, module, and overall levels. Learners got a meaningful picture of where their preparation actually stood.
Each mode scores difficulty at a different granularity level.
We built a complete admin layer covering content management, bulk question bank uploads, exam scheduling, coupon controls, and user verification. The Blue Nelumbo team could manage every part of the platform without raising a single developer ticket.
Content, scheduling, coupons, and verification, all self-served.
What building production-first actually delivered for Blue Nelumbo
From static content to a commercially live LMS
Built in 3 months, then hardened through a further 3 months of QA and beta testing with real users. Curriculum management, subscription access, payments, analytics, and admin operations were all production-ready and fully operational at launch.
Built to handle real load from day one
Blue Nelumbo launched with infrastructure that could support over 1,000 concurrent users without performance compromises.
A complete commercial offering, not a single price point
Full syllabus, crash course, module-wise, free trial, and protection plan were all live at launch. Blue Nelumbo could go to market with a complete commercial offering rather than a single price point.
Commercially ready for an international audience
India, Western markets, and the rest of the world pricing were handled automatically. INR and USD resolved at checkout without manual intervention, making Blue Nelumbo commercially ready for an international audience from day one.
Shivam and his team have done a tremendous job in helping us build our CFA edtech platform not just architecturally right but also help ensure its production ready. The team supported us every step of the way and was super fast in getting changes accomplished. Cant recommend them enough!
